KIMS Fertility Centre laser assisted hatching IVF add-on

Laser Assisted Hatching

After fertilisation, embryos develop within a protective outer shell called the zona pellucida. For an embryo to implant in the uterus and start a pregnancy, it must first hatch out of this shell. In some cases, the embryo may struggle to break free, which can prevent implantation. Laser Assisted Hatching uses a focused laser beam to make a tiny opening in the shell, helping the embryo hatch naturally and increasing its chances of embedding into the uterine lining.

This technique is delicate, precise and quick. At KIMS Fertility IVF Centre, we use cutting-edge laser technology in our embryology lab to perform this process under strict conditions, ensuring safety and accuracy.

Why is it done?

Laser Assisted Hatching is not required for every IVF patient. It is typically advised in the following situations:

  • Women over the age of 35, where egg quality may be lower
  • Couples with repeated IVF failures, where implantation may be a challenge
  • Embryos with a thick or hardened zona pellucida, often seen in older eggs
  • Frozen-thawed embryos, where the shell may be altered during freezing
  • Embryos that develop slowly or do not reach the expected stage by day 5

In these cases, making it easier for the embryo to hatch may lead to improved implantation and improve your chances of getting pregnant.

The Process

Laser Assisted Hatching is performed just before embryo transfer. Under a microscope, our embryologist uses a laser to create a very small hole in the zona pellucida. The procedure takes only a few seconds and is done with extreme precision, avoiding harm to the inner embryo.

Once the laser step is complete, the embryo is ready to be transferred into the uterus. The rest of the IVF process continues as normal. If implantation is successful, the embryo will continue developing into a healthy pregnancy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Laser Assisted Hatching always needed during IVF?
×
No, it is a specialised procedure used only in certain cases. Your fertility specialist will recommend it based on your history and embryo development.
Is this technique safe for the embryo?
+
Yes, when performed by trained embryologists with high-quality laser equipment, it is considered safe and does not harm the embryo.
Can Laser Assisted Hatching be done on frozen embryos?
+
Yes, in fact, it is often recommended for frozen embryos because freezing and thawing can sometimes harden the zona pellucida.
Will it increase my IVF success rate?
+
It may improve implantation rates for specific patients, particularly older women or those who have had several failed IVF cycles.
Is there an additional cost for Laser Assisted Hatching?
+
Yes, there is usually an added cost for this procedure, as it involves special equipment and expertise. However, we only advise it if it offers a real benefit for your treatment.
How do I know if I’m a candidate for Laser Assisted Hatching?
+
Your fertility doctor will review your age, IVF history, embryo quality, and previous implantation outcomes. If you’ve had multiple IVF failures or are using frozen embryos, this technique might be considered to improve your chances.
Does Laser Assisted Hatching guarantee pregnancy?
+
No procedure can guarantee pregnancy. Laser Assisted Hatching may improve the chances of implantation in certain patients, but success also depends on factors like embryo quality, uterine health, and overall reproductive health.
Will the embryo still hatch on its own after the laser is used?
+
Yes. The laser creates a small opening in the shell, but the embryo continues the natural hatching process. The technique simply helps overcome barriers that might otherwise prevent implantation.
