Egg and sperm freezing preservation

Fertility Preservation

Fertility preservation allows individuals and couples to store reproductive cells- eggs for women and sperm for men, for use at a later stage. The reasons can range from medical treatments like chemotherapy, which may harm fertility, to personal goals such as career planning or waiting for the right partner.

Egg and sperm freezing are now well-established techniques. Advances in cryopreservation, especially the method known as vitrification (ultra-rapid freezing) - have improved survival rates of thawed cells, leading to better outcomes in IVF.

Benefits

  • Timing Control:Allows future pregnancy planning after cancer treatment or career planning.
  • Younger Gametes:Eggs and sperm are frozen at their healthiest age, improving future success.
  • Backup Option:Offers a safeguard in case of age-related fertility decline.
  • Personal Choice: Empowers individuals to delay parenthood on their own terms.

Preparation and Processs

  • Fertility Evaluation:Includes ovarian reserve or semen testing.
  • Stimulation Cycle:Women will receive hormone injections for 10–12 days.
  • Sperm Collection:Male partners should avoid ejaculation 2–5 days before freezing.
  • Freezing Consent: Written consent is required for storage duration and use.
  • Healthy Habits:Stop smoking, reduce stress and follow a nutritious diet.

The Process

Egg Freezing:

The process begins with hormone injections over 8-12 days to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs. These are then retrieved under mild sedation using a thin needle guided by ultrasound. Mature eggs are identified and frozen using vitrification - a rapid freezing process that protects cell structure.

Sperm Freezing:

This involves producing a semen sample, usually by masturbation - which is analysed, processed and frozen in liquid nitrogen. It is a simple and quick procedure, often done in a single visit. For men who cannot produce a sample on the day, surgical sperm retrieval may be an option.

The frozen eggs or sperm are stored securely and can be used in future IVF or ICSI cycles.

General Success Rate

  • Frozen-thawed egg success for women under 35: around 40–50% pregnancy rate per embryo transfer
  • Sperm survival post-thaw: over 80% with high fertilisation potential
  • Long-term success depends on age at freezing and the quality of gametes

Frequently Asked Questions

At what age should I consider egg freezing?
×
The ideal time is before 35, when egg quality and quantity are better. However, women up to 38 may still benefit, depending on their ovarian reserve.
How long can frozen eggs or sperm be stored?
+
In India, gametes can be legally stored for up to 10 years. Extensions may be granted under special circumstances.
Is the egg retrieval process painful?
+
It involves mild discomfort, but sedation is given, and the recovery is quick. Most women resume normal activity the next day.
Will frozen eggs or sperm affect pregnancy outcomes?
+
Success rates using frozen gametes are comparable to fresh ones when properly frozen and stored.
Can I freeze eggs or sperm if I am unmarried?
+
Yes. Fertility preservation is available to anyone, regardless of marital status, based on personal choice or medical need.
How many eggs should I freeze for a good chance of pregnancy later?
+
For women under 35, freezing around 10–15 mature eggs may offer a good chance of one healthy pregnancy. The exact number may vary depending on your age and fertility health, which your doctor will help assess.
Is sperm freezing suitable for long-term storage?
+
Yes, sperm can remain viable for many years if stored correctly. There are documented cases of successful pregnancies using sperm stored for over a decade.
Will fertility preservation guarantee a future pregnancy?
+
No, it cannot guarantee pregnancy, but it significantly improves your chances. Success depends on the number and quality of eggs or sperm frozen, your age at the time, and future IVF outcomes.
Why is it done?
+

Fertility preservation is recommended in a variety of situations, such as:

  • Women undergoing cancer treatment that could damage ovaries
  • Men receiving chemotherapy or radiotherapy
  • Women with family history of early menopause
  • Career-focused individuals choosing to delay parenthood
  • Couples with religious or ethical reasons to avoid embryo freezing
  • Individuals undergoing gender-affirming medical treatment

By freezing eggs or sperm early, you can improve your chances of having a biological child later in life, even when natural fertility has declined.
