Advanced ICSI treatment at KIMS Fertility Centre

Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)

ICSI is a micromanipulation technique used alongside IVF. In standard IVF, eggs and sperm are mixed in a dish, allowing fertilisation to happen on its own. In ICSI, the embryologist selects a single healthy-looking sperm and injects it directly into the cytoplasm of a mature egg. This allows fertilisation to bypass many of the natural barriers, making it ideal for couples facing male factor infertility or previous failed IVF cycles.

The technique has been a breakthrough in fertility medicine, offering hope to couples with even the most severe sperm-related issues.

Benefits

  • Male Infertility Solution: Helps overcome issues like low sperm count or motility.
  • Fertilisation Control: Increases fertilisation chances by injecting sperm directly into the egg.
  • Surgical Retrieval Support: Works well with sperm retrieved via TESA or Micro-TESE.
  • Prevents IVF Failure: Reduces the risk of fertilisation failure in conventional IVF cycles.

Preparation and Process

  • Fertility Testing: Includes semen analysis, blood tests and scans for both partners.
  • Lifestyle Adjustments: Stop smoking, avoid alcohol and eat a healthy diet.
  • Timed Planning: Understand your cycle and appointments, as timing is crucial.
  • Antioxidants Use: Male partners may be advised to take supplements to improve sperm quality.
  • Medication Schedule: Female partner starts hormone injections to stimulate egg development.

The Process

The ICSI process begins with ovarian stimulation in the female partner, followed by egg retrieval. On the same day, a semen sample is collected from the male partner or obtained via surgical extraction if required.

In the laboratory, individual sperm are examined under a microscope. One sperm is carefully selected and injected into each mature egg using a very fine needle. This step is done with exceptional precision using specialised micromanipulation tools.

Fertilised eggs are then monitored for development, and healthy embryos are transferred into the uterus or frozen for future use.

General Success Rate

  • Fertilisation Rate: 70-80% of injected eggs
  • Women under 35: approximately 45-50% pregnancy rate per cycle
  • Over 40: around 15-20%
  • Success depends heavily on egg quality, sperm health and embryo development.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between IVF and ICSI?
×
In IVF, sperm fertilise the egg on their own in a dish. In ICSI, a single sperm is selected and directly injected into the egg. ICSI is particularly useful when sperm quality is low.
Is ICSI suitable for all fertility cases?
+
Not all. It is mainly used for male factor infertility or when IVF has failed previously. Your fertility specialist will recommend the best option for you.
Does ICSI increase the chances of pregnancy?
+
ICSI increases the chances of fertilisation, but pregnancy also depends on the quality of the eggs, embryos and uterine environment.
Is ICSI safe?
+
Yes. ICSI has been used globally for decades and is considered safe. The procedure is performed by trained embryologists with strict quality controls governing the process.
Are there any risks to the baby with ICSI?
+
Most babies born through ICSI are healthy. Research shows a very low risk of genetic or developmental concerns and that it is comparable to traditional IVF.
How long does it take to complete an ICSI cycle?
+
An ICSI cycle typically takes about 2–3 weeks. This includes ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval, sperm injection, embryo culture, and embryo transfer. A pregnancy test is usually done about two weeks after transfer.
Can ICSI be used with frozen sperm or donor sperm?
+
Yes, ICSI can be done using frozen or donor sperm. It is especially helpful when the number of motile sperm is limited, or if sperm was surgically retrieved or preserved earlier due to medical treatments.
Will I need to rest after embryo transfer?
+
You can resume most normal activities after the transfer, but it's best to avoid heavy exercise, stress and travel for a few days. Your doctor may advise light rest based on your condition and response to treatment.
Why is it done?
+

ICSI is typically recommended when:

  • The male partner has low sperm count or poor motility
  • There are abnormalities in sperm shape (morphology)
  • The sperm cannot penetrate the egg naturally
  • Fertilisation failed in a previous IVF attempt
  • Surgical sperm retrieval methods like TESA or Micro-TESE are used
  • There is unexplained infertility despite normal test results

ICSI improves the chances of successful fertilisation by bypassing these challenges.
