IUI Treatment at KIMS Fertility Centre

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

Intrauterine Insemination is a technique that takes sperm from the male and directly introduces it into the uterus so that there is a better chance of fertilising the egg during ovulation. You can confirm the same with a pregnancy test in 2 weeks. This procedure is done with no anaesthesia and you will lie down on the table for a few minutes afterwards. This method is preferred when you have unexplained infertility, endometriosis, mild male factor infertility, cervical factor infertility or any other related conditions. At KIMS Fertility IVF Centre, you can be assured of receiving top-notch care from our fertility specialists!

Benefits

  • Minimally Invasive: Simple and painless procedure performed without anaesthesia.
  • Affordable Option: Less expensive than IVF, often used as a first-line treatment.
  • Timed Fertility Boost: Increases chances of fertilisation during the ovulatory window.
  • Mild Medication: Requires only gentle ovarian stimulation or natural cycle monitoring.

How to Prepare for OITI

  • Ovulation Tracking: Accurate timing through scans or ovulation kits is crucial.
  • Semen Sample: Collected and processed to improve sperm concentration and quality.
  • Mild Stimulation: Some women may take tablets or injections to support ovulation.
  • Baseline Scan: An ultrasound is done early in the cycle to check readiness.
  • General Health: Eat well, stay relaxed and avoid alcohol or smoking.

OITI Procedure

First, our doctors will track your cycle using ultrasound scans and blood tests. This will help our fertility specialist pinpoint when exactly you will ovulate, so that they can introduce the sperm into your uterus at the right time. Next, our specialist will take a sperm sample from your partner and run a few tests on it. You will then be inseminated with a flexible catheter that contains your partner’s sperm. Then, you will need to rest for a bit, before you go home.

General Success Rate

  • Women under 35: approx 10-20% success per cycle
  • Aged 35-40: 5-10%
  • Over 40: around 2-5%

Multiple cycles may be needed. Combining with ovulation induction may slightly improve outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)?
×
It is a simple method of introducing the sperm into the uterus of a woman using a small catheter or tube, when the woman is known to be in the ovulatory period of her cycle. The average success rates of IUI for each cycle are about 10-20%, with an increase as more IUI cycles are done.
Who is a good candidate for IUI?
+
Couples with unexplained infertility issues, irregular ovulation, poor sperm quality or motility and cervical mucus issues can try IUI, if they want to conceive naturally.
Can IUI be done alone or will other treatments be necessary?
+
Sometimes, you may have to undergo ovulation induction, along with IUI so that there is a better chance of fertilisation due to more eggs being released during ovulation.
Are there any side effects from getting IUI done?
+
You may deal with some mild cramping or spotting. You may get an infection rarely, if the catheter was not sterile. If you are induced, then multiple pregnancies or ovarian hyperstimulation may also occur.
How long should I wait to take a pregnancy test, after getting IUI done?
+
We suggest you wait two weeks before getting a pregnancy test done. Don’t worry if it does not happen. We will help you with the next steps.
How many IUI attempts should I try before moving on to IVF?
+
Most couples try 3-6 IUI cycles before considering IVF, especially if the woman is under 35. However, this depends on age, diagnosis, and how your body responds. Your fertility doctor will guide you based on your progress.
Can stress affect my chances of success with IUI?
+
Yes. High stress levels can impact hormone balance and ovulation. Try to stay calm, eat well, get enough sleep, and talk openly with your care team. Emotional support plays a big role in fertility treatment outcomes.
Will I need to rest after IUI?
+
No extended rest is needed. You may lie down for 10–15 minutes after the procedure, but you can go home and resume your usual routine the same day. Just avoid strenuous activities or heavy lifting for a day or two.
Why is IUI done?
+
Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) is a method that can be considered if you have unexplained infertility, irregular ovulation, issues with cervical mucus, or if your partner has low sperm counts or low sperm motility. Donor sperm may also be used in some cases, when your partner suffers from azoospermia (absence of sperm cells when they ejaculate). The main point here to remember is the sperm sample is highly concentrated with healthy cells, so that there are higher chances of fertilisation after insemination.
