In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF)

IVF is an assisted reproductive technology (ART) used when natural conception is difficult or unsuccessful. It is recommended in a wide range of cases, including blocked fallopian tubes, endometriosis, male infertility, ovulatory disorders, and unexplained infertility.

The process involves ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval, fertilisation in the laboratory, and embryo transfer. IVF allows doctors to closely monitor every stage of fertilisation and early embryo development, offering higher chances of success, especially for couples who have not conceived with other treatments.

Benefits

  • Higher Success: IVF often has a better pregnancy success rate compared to many other fertility treatments.
  • Genetic Screening: With Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT), embryos can be screened for genetic or chromosomal issues before transfer.
  • Donor Options: IVF supports the use of donor eggs or sperm if one partner has fertility limitations.
  • Flexible Planning: IVF with cryopreservation allows individuals or couples to freeze eggs, sperm or embryos before medical treatments or life events, offering more control over family planning.
  • Wider Solutions: IVF addresses many infertility issues including blocked fallopian tubes, ovulation disorders, male infertility, endometriosis and unexplained infertility.

Preparation and Process

  • Initial Consultation: You and your partner will undergo fertility tests, including ovarian reserve testing and semen analysis, as well as infection screening.
  • Healthy Diet: Eat a well-balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins to support reproductive health.
  • Weight Management: Being significantly underweight or overweight can reduce your IVF success rate. Aim for a healthy BMI.
  • Avoid Toxins: Refrain from smoking, alcohol and recreational drug use, as these can affect egg and sperm quality.
  • Limit Caffeine: High caffeine intake may reduce success. Speak to your doctor about a safe limit.
  • Stress Reduction: Gentle exercise, yoga, mindfulness or other calming activities may support emotional and physical well-being.
  • Medication Support: Your doctor may prescribe medicines to regulate your cycle or treat existing hormonal imbalances.
  • Essential Supplements: Folic acid is usually recommended. Your doctor may suggest additional supplements based on your needs.

The Process

The IVF process takes around 2-3 weeks per cycle and involves several steps:

  1. Ovarian Stimulation - Hormonal injections are given to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs. Your progress is monitored through scans and blood tests.
  2. Egg Retrieval - Once the eggs are mature, they are collected using a short procedure under sedation, guided by ultrasound.
  3. Fertilisation - The eggs are fertilised with sperm in the laboratory. This can be done via conventional IVF or ICSI, depending on sperm quality.
  4. Embryo Culture - The fertilised eggs (now embryos) are monitored over 3-5 days to assess development. The healthiest embryos are selected for transfer.
  5. Embryo Transfer - One or two embryos are placed into the uterus using a thin catheter. Any remaining viable embryos may be frozen for future use.
  6. Pregnancy Testing - A blood test is done 12-14 days later to confirm pregnancy.

General Success Rate

IVF success rates vary depending on several factors, especially age:

  • Women under 35: around 45-55% success per cycle
  • Women aged 35-40: 35-40%
  • Women over 40: 15-20%
  • While IVF is not a guarantee, it remains one of the most effective fertility treatments available today.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is IVF the only way to get pregnant with fertility issues?
×
Not always. Many couples conceive with less invasive treatments first. IVF is recommended when simpler methods are not successful or not suitable.
How many IVF cycles might I need?
+
It varies for each couple. Some succeed on the first attempt, while others may need two or more cycles. Age and other health factors play a role.
Does IVF increase the risk of twins?
+
Yes, if multiple embryos are transferred. At KIMS Fertility IVF Centre, we follow a safe, single-embryo transfer policy when appropriate to reduce risks.
What are the side effects of IVF?
+
Common side effects include bloating, mild cramping, or mood swings. In rare cases, Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS) can occur.
How successful is IVF?
+
Success depends on age, egg and sperm quality, and overall health. For women under 35, success rates are generally higher.
Can I work during my IVF treatment?
+
Yes, most women continue working during IVF. You may need to take time off for scans, procedures like egg retrieval, and rest after embryo transfer. If your job is physically demanding or highly stressful, consider discussing adjustments with your doctor.
Is IVF painful?
+
The IVF process involves some injections and procedures, but most women describe it as manageable. Egg retrieval is done under sedation, and embryo transfer is usually painless. Our team ensures you are as comfortable as possible at every step.
What happens to unused embryos after IVF?
+
Any good-quality embryos not used during the current cycle can be frozen for future attempts. This gives you additional chances at pregnancy without repeating the entire IVF cycle, and it’s a common and safe practice at KIMS Fertility IVF Centre.
Why is it done?
+

IVF may be advised in the following cases:

  • Fallopian tube damage or blockage
  • Endometriosis
  • Male infertility (low sperm count or motility)
  • Ovulation problems or PCOS
  • Advanced maternal age
  • Recurrent pregnancy loss
  • Unexplained infertility
  • Previous failed IUI or other treatments

In some cases, IVF may also be used with donor sperm, donor eggs or embryos, or as part of fertility preservation.
