Advanced PGT genetic testing at KIMS Fertility Centre

Hormonal and Genetic Testing

Hormonal and genetic testing helps identify hidden causes of infertility and increases the success rate of fertility treatments such as IVF.

  • PGT-A (Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Aneuploidies) checks for chromosomal abnormalities in embryos
  • PGT-M (for Monogenic disorders) screens for inherited single-gene conditions
  • PGT-SR (for Structural Rearrangements) detects chromosome translocations or inversions that may lead to miscarriage or IVF failure
  • These tests are done before embryo transfer to help select the most viable embryos for implantation.

Benefits

  • Detects Abnormalities: Identifies chromosomal or genetic issues in embryos.
  • Reduces Miscarriage: Helps lower the risk of early pregnancy loss.
  • Healthy Embryo Transfer: Increases the chance of implanting a genetically normal embryo.
  • Family Planning Tool: Ideal for couples with known hereditary conditions.

Preparation and Process

  • Genetic Counselling: Helps you understand risks, inheritance patterns and options.
  • Karyotyping Test: Evaluates chromosomes in both partners.
  • IVF Preparation: This test requires IVF and embryo biopsy on Day 5 or 6.
  • Health History: Share any personal or family history of genetic disorders.
  • Informed Consent: Sign specific forms before undergoing genetic testing.

The Process

  • Hormonal testing: Blood samples are collected at specific points in the menstrual cycle to assess hormone levels and reproductive function.
  • PGT during IVF: Embryos are created through IVF and monitored until the blastocyst stage. A few cells are then biopsied and sent for genetic testing. The most suitable embryo is selected for transfer.
  • PGT is a safe technique and does not affect the development of the embryo.

General Success Rate

  1. Implantation rate of chromosomally normal embryos (after PGT-A): approx. 50–70%
  2. PGT can reduce miscarriage risk by up to 50%

Increases IVF success per transfer, especially for women over 35 or with a history of failed implantation or pregnancy loss

Frequently Asked Questions

Is genetic testing necessary for everyone undergoing IVF?
×
Not always. PGT is usually recommended for couples with a history of repeated IVF failure, miscarriage, advanced maternal age or known genetic conditions. Your fertility specialist will advise if it is appropriate in your case.
Will genetic testing harm my embryo?
+
No. The biopsy is performed carefully at the blastocyst stage by trained embryologists. The embryo remains healthy for transfer or freezing.
What is the difference between PGT-A, PGT-M and PGT-SR?
+
PGT-A checks for missing or extra chromosomes.
PGT-M screens for specific inherited diseases such as cystic fibrosis or thalassaemia.
PGT-SR is used to detect structural changes in chromosomes that may affect fertility or pregnancy outcome.
What if none of my embryos are suitable after PGT?
+
If all embryos show abnormalities, your fertility team will discuss your next steps. This may include trying another IVF cycle, using donor eggs or sperm, or other options. Every case is treated individually.
Is hormonal testing only done for women?
+
Primarily, yes. Hormonal testing in women helps evaluate ovarian reserve, ovulation, and hormonal balance. In some cases, hormone tests may also be done for men to assess testosterone or other reproductive hormones.
Can PGT guarantee a successful pregnancy?
+
While PGT significantly improves the chances of selecting a healthy embryo, it does not guarantee pregnancy. Success still depends on several factors including age, uterine health and overall fertility status.
How long do genetic test results take?
+
Results from embryo genetic testing typically take 7 to 10 days. This allows your fertility team to plan the embryo transfer accordingly or freeze the embryo for a future cycle.
Is genetic testing available for all IVF patients at your centre?
+
Yes, the option is available to all patients at KIMS Fertility IVF Centre. However, it is offered based on medical need and individual risk. Your fertility doctor will guide you on whether PGT is beneficial for your case.
